rec0ver_ from that ^^ losE

I stumbled into some really nice people in Philly. More than usual actually. I don’t remember why me and Shawn Beeks started talking but i realised he was creating things for some reason. Today i got this photo of his painting and asked him to sum up his latest time.

“The first time I broke my knee was February 13th, 2003. Up until that point I had built my life around skateboarding and designing skateboard graphics. For me, skateboarding and art were inseparable, so when I couldn’t skate, I lost the will to create, thus rolling me down a hall of deep depression. I don’t remember how I got out of it, but I’m sure being able to approach art as a creative process separate from skateboarding helped. Since then, I’ve put more energy into the advancement of my fine art outlets, and accepted the painful limitations of what I could physically accomplish. Six years later and I’m faced with similar situation. After years of multiple surgeries, physical therapy, and gym memberships, my knee is still not strong enough to handle the stress of skateboarding. October 20th, 2009 was the last time I skated. Now I have the rest of my life to recover from that lose with art.

Interview:

Loney, Dear

He is the man whose beautiful, crisp yet bombastiskta music stirs up emotions unmentionable inboard, outboard well, everywhere. After the same attention and successful association with Sub Pop is now Emil Swan Meadow, aka Loney, Dear, back with a new album. Joyzine got to have a chat over Way Out West.

The worst time is just before you do an interview or when waiting for a band to go on stage. For when you stand there and stare out of nothing. It is not entirely justified where you stand and stare, neither party in this case leaning against a metal railing outside the church Annedal or hanging alone in a bar. Not yet. As soon as Emil Swan Meadow shows up, I will be justified, then I will have my place. To my great pleasure, I am not alone in having trouble finding my place. A television crew with a female reporter at the forefront practicing different påannonseringar at the wall with one church, one påannonseringen worse than the others. The reporter is getting nervous. So I offered her to go before me in the interview schedule, let her know that she can take all the time she needs. She nods gratefully. How to turn a van on gravel transport. Out will Loney, Dear.

Emil Svanängen is calm and peaceful, television interview, he managed superbly, the female reporter repaired courage, and if he feels no nervousness before tonight’s gig in an assumed crowded Annedal Church as part of the opening of this year’s Way Out West, he shows it not. Instead Emil gives the impression of being a man who has found satisfaction and liver. He laughs at my observation after we settled down on the church stairs in front of a church’s side doors:

- Yes, I have thought what I need now, to have a nice life. I need nothing more. Though it clearly, touring is still pretty … it is starting to feel better, but it would feel nice to have a bit more economically marginal so we could just settle things by purchasing services as well. It is well part of the next step I think.

Sub Pop will Polyvinyl

“Sinster into a state of Hope” sings Emil Svanängen on “Loney, Noir”, the disc that came to start a persistent buzz, especially across the Atlantic, both for the peculiar music but also thanks to the fact that Loney, Dear sign up the legendary rock label Sub Pop. Well, the cooperation with Sub Pop was hardly notice anything bad, quite the opposite, but Emil lifts up like that hope lies in the future.

- Sub Pop was great in the beginning. They will not let my music anymore, I still accounts for about a company called Polyvinyl. Their greatest band is Of Montreal. It is a much better company for me actually, right when it comes to build. But it was really the best thing that has happened to me when Sub Pop signed to me, even when I look back on it today. But then … It was not their thing either, it’s not rock like that found in the rest of their catalog, so it suits me pretty well now to get another company. A more companies enter the state.

“We want to build their own world of music”

Trying to describe Loney, Dear’s music is like trying to turn into mist with a clenched fist, how hard you compress your hand smoke still seeping out through the cracks between your fingers. On other continents, throw themselves with terms such as “pastoral” and “Spiritual” when you try to define Emil’s music, he himself is a bit more humble.

- Sounds like I am, of course, I strive for originality, self expression, your own sounds. We want to build their own world of music. I often shun things that sounds familiar, try to steer away from it. But yes, it’s serious music. Actual life-affirming music. And sad.

Following the success of “Loney, Noir” was the appropriate time for the first time “deliver”, this time with many more eyes on it, and some became “Dear John” response to “Loney, Noir”. The result was much more restrained and gloomy than we are accustomed.

- We were out and toured with “Loney, Noir”, 2007, and everything was upside down. I had no strength to do anything, start Emil thoughtfully. So it felt completely crazy to play such music, when they themselves were totally exhausted. Then I felt pretty strongly that I need to have five, six, seven additional songs that are just dark. It felt good not to play this happy, or, some music from my CDs have become little more cheerful live music, but that it should really be there. So I had to take out a small new course. Putting your foot down, choose the expression you want. Still, “Loney, Noir” a bit of my favorite album, he says, looking out over the lush green area surrounding Annedal Church. A bit vague, you can also hear the sound check has started inside the church.

- Then I knew that the new disc would be difficult to do so I started as early as possible with the work. I do not know if there was much pressure from outside, there was pressure from myself also, I wanted to do something odd. I also think that I wanted to find the joy of making music again, and it starts to come first now, for the most recent album was that I had to do it. Mass reasons as well. You want to move forward also. Now I really hope that you can get started again, I have already begun to trigger a little. It is surely less pretentious music this time I think. It’s pretty exciting.

It grows remarkably

Despite the fact that things really started to take off for Emil and his friends, there’sa gigs in Argentina and a U.S. tour with Anna Ternheim (which is his bond …), there has been much more difficult to grasp the Swedish audience. There are really only two cities in Sweden, where Emil really feel comfortable, one city is growing University (where he made a completely phenomenal event during last year’s Popadelica) and the other our capital.

- There is growing very strange here, because you can not see anything of themselves growing. It is best that I can see that I run into people I know who they are, who know about my music and like it. It’s probably the only way I notice that the music is spread on, otherwise I see nothing. It is very blurred for me so far that. Although I think it is going very well in Stockholm. There is still one of the cities where it will most people in the world, when we play. That is where I have played the most, too. People know about it. So, since I’m home in two places, so there are two cities I have been a prophet in which, however, I am not a prophet in the rest of Sweden instead! Stockholm University and feels quite comfortable to play in, but big in Sweden, it is not as comfortable.

Work and enjoy – while

What about the practice? And finds no peace to write new music when people are constantly pulling and tearing at one? Emil Swan meadow looking for a little while before he responds.

- Right now everything feels very exciting. I agree on building a small home base, in order better to make music and to better tour. I agree that linking the pads now, it feels like. But practice, therefore, I do not really know, I have not had time to get to the routine yet. But no, you do not really have time to write new music when you are away on stuff. You need some breaks, it can take quite some time to write new songs. It has been so much more that I had to get on – I got me a home and I try to find somewhere to work, so it has come out quite a lot of time. But I try to work on as much as I can anyway, that’s my philosophy – to work all the time and enjoy all the time. And a small part of the job of bringing to dropping things, and relax a bit, to find balance. I have a very luxurious life right now. It’s amazing.

COFFEE PARTY

In Way Out West’s first klubbdag share Mr Swan Meadow Annedal Church with two other artists, the beautiful and extremely talented Amanda Bergman (Sharks) and the equally lovely and talented Sarah Assbring (El Perro del Mar), both I and Emil is on the agreement that evening will become somewhat legendary. At this festival gigs are something else Emil really looking forward to.

- I really have the right expectations or no expectations at all. I do not know, it feels like one of those flip-flop-or-night tonight. Not that it looks bad, but most that sometimes it becomes just like, four year old children’s parties, when there is so much fun that you start to cry instead. I do not really know what to believe. It should also be fun to come in and meet with Sara and talk to her. There is so much fun, her bassist living type five hundred meters from me, fifty mil away, it feels as exotic as well. That we come here and meet here, although we meet in Stockholm … No, it’ll be fun, I really love festivals. I love this coffee rope, now both Sara and I have some kind of main character here tonight, but otherwise it is still not the main character when playing at a festival. It is just part of it, and then it’s a blast to play.

Next year, perhaps even becoming the main stage?

- Yes, it is not impossible that it comes off well to that point, so you could play there. It would be very agreeable. I do not know what will happen in the career really, except that it will go well. But it is difficult to see when. It’s probably what I am trying to convey to the band going and waiting for – it really is … do not slap, more like a small bounce up as well. Just something small, a small unknown power that should not have counted on. As should be lit up a bit. It is not so important really, but it would feel pretty … nice.

When will we hear new music signed Loney, Dear?

- Yes … music to hear, it will be enough … I will probably ensure that you get to hear any music over the year. Something small, it will be enough, I would like to say that there will be an album about a year, but it probably will not do. But who knows?

Man, I’ve had a great week in Holland. We are really enjoying ourselves these days and the music keeps on growing to us. Keep looking for a shootage from a light house from Vlieland “into the great wide open” festival. We carried kg’s of stuff up the stairs and did a recording we are really proud of. Have done so many things during the years just for doing it but have realised we are our own masters and can make our own difference. I look forward so much to seeing this thing. It was the song “Shivering green” which (coincidently) will be released on vinyl in the states during October 2009.

talking about releases, im thinking about skipping the song “lower your head” for the vinyl issue of Fontana. it does not make me happy, the way most of the other songs do. your opinions on this? its a neat song but a bit “teeny”.

Our lovely photographer Sara Arnald took this image from the light house.
